I have
always been fascinated by the way environments make me feel. My
inner radar has identified spaces that fill me with energy and a
sense of well-being, as well as those that, frankly, just don't
feel that good. It wasn't until I started to study Feng Shui that
I understood what I so intuitively knew--that everything is
energy. The Chinese have long known that this energy, or
ch'i, flows through the universe, the earth, our homes, and our
bodies, and as we orient ourselves to its flow, we invite into our
lives the peace, happiness, and harmony we seek. This concept made
perfect sense to me! I'd experienced it countless times in my life
through the many changes I'd encountered. As I continued my study
of this very ancient understanding of environmental energy and its
movement, a persistent question kept coming to mind: Could the principles
of Feng Shui be applied to the process of actually moving, of transitioning
from one house to another? Could there be a way of aligning ourselves
so that we would not be mired in the chaos, stress, and confusion
that seems so inevitable during this time? It seemed to me that
an affirmative answer to this question had the potential to help
many people.
Moving
seems to be something I know quite a bit about. In my 55 years,
I have relocated almost two dozen times, from city to city, and
from state to state. When I was a child, it was normal for us
to move every couple of years. My father worked in the oil industry,
so frequent transfers were a part of life. With each move to a
new oil town, my mother managed to recreate our home once again,
so I grew up knowing a constancy of "home" even within
the inconsistency of environment. Over the years, she taught me
how to move with a minimum of chaos, which is no small feat!
Years
later, I reflect back on all she knew and I marvel at all she
accomplished. Her intention was always to create a homey place
for us that felt familiar and safe. Not only was she successful
in this time and time again, but she instilled in me the possibilities
inherent in moving on to a new place, a new home, and a new life.
I am not saying that it wasn't without deep sadness and loss at
times. There were often real challenges, but Mom just rolled up
her sleeves, set her mind on what she wanted to accomplish, and
got to work. She was a master at planning, preparing, packing,
and then re-placing everything perfectly within a new home. She
didn't realize it, but she was practicing good Feng Shui even
then!
Several
years ago I told my mom that I thought we should write a book.
I had recently helped several friends move, and it had become
painfully obvious to me that people really needed HELP! I had
seen people wait until the day before the moving van arrived to
pick up their packing boxes. I had seen people indiscriminately
throw everything into one big box (and I do mean everything,
including open food boxes, miscellaneous utensils, dusty knick-knacks,
grimy appliances, and a throw rug off the floor) and then label
it "Misc."!!! I had seen dirty blankets and quilts used
as packing material. I had witnessed such a lack of planning and
preparation, such an absence of intention and forethought, such
chaos and stress and confusion, that I felt it was time for my
mother's voice to be heard! She would know what people needed
to do!
Sadly,
before our project could be made a reality, my mother unexpectedly
passed away. Her ideas remain with me, however, and it is my deepest
desire to pass them on to those of you who are facing the enormous
and life-changing process of relocation. In Elemental Moving,
I share with you my mom, Eileen's, time-tested methods of moving
within the context of Feng Shui. It is the perfect marriage of
practicality and vision, and I sincerely hope that these ideas
provide a helpful plan for how you can approach this transitional
time. I can say with heart-felt confidence that it is my mother's
wish, as well as my own, that you will be able to create the home
of your dreams. May it be a place that supports your life and
fills you with peace.
